To achieve this, Ungana aims at the following objectives:
* Facilitate communication and the flow of ideas between young people on development issues affecting Africa today.
* Contribute to the projects and endeavours of NGO's, institutions, government departments, charities and corporations with similar interests through volunteer action and joint fundraising and awareness efforts.
* Act as a forum where young people interact and network, thereby exposing them to different issues in the region. It offers an opportunity for young people to develop their skills as leaders and responsible citizens.
* To motivate young people to take an active role in the development process through volunteer work.
* Provide a platform for the debate and discussions of issues affecting young people today.
Ungana's Programs and Activities
1. Discovery Evenings
These are a series of innovative discussions on issues affecting the lives of young people today. The discussions which centre on development themes are relevant to young people today. They are designed to invite young people to explore and learn from the experiences and insights of a vast range of the region's professionals in various fields. The discovery evenings are held quarterly every year.
2. Educative Workshops
These are a series of workshops, which are held once every month. They are aimed at equipping our members with skills that will assist them to be more effective volunteers, enhance their employability, as well as build their individual capacities to be better citizens of Africa.
3. Girl Child Issues
Ungana has been actively involved in the Girl Child issues and is a member of the Girl Child Network (GCN). Ungana and GCN have in the past and still continue to:
* Campaign and raise awareness of issues affecting girls especially those living under difficult conditions i.e. Street girls
* Highlight the plight of girls who are and have been sexually abused and finding ways of assisting them to realise their full potential and improve their living conditions
4. Non-Formal Education Program
This is a program designed to provide non-formal education to children in the homes Ungana visits. It involves teaching art, craft, sport, music and basic literacy.
6. Charity Works
Currently, Ungana is carrying out some charity works that are geared towards improving the lives of the disadvantaged. We organize clothes drives for the benefit of the underprivileged such as the street families and other members of our society living in tough conditions. At the same time, Ungana always look forward to initiating programs where members volunteer to teach, counsel, encourage and support worthy causes.
7. Other Activities
* Ungana participates in other charitable activities. We have organized Health Days at Dagoretti Child in Need Project, an Ungana initiative run under AMREF, Huruma Ghetto, Exodus from the street Initiative, Clothes Drive for the Street Mothers at Kayole Social Hall etcetera.
* Other activities Ungana has participated in include; the annual Barclays Bank Charity walk; the Uvumbuzi Bikathon - a bicycle marathon that raises awareness as well as funds for environment-oriented projects; the Kick Polio Out of Kenya Campaign; The Heart to Heart run - an initiative to raise funds for people with cardiac illnesses, among others.
* We also carry out an annual peer and career-counseling session at various youth oriented centers, institutions on issues affecting the youth such as drug, alcohol and substance abuse, HIV/AIDS/STIS and Reproductive Health. This is done partnership with other organizations such as: Girl Child Network (GCN), I Choose Life- Nairobi University Chapter
* Ungana acts as a forum for youth networking and exposure. We organize for debates, seminars, and discussion forums where youth can meet and interact with influential players in our society who guide, counsel and challenge youth to initiate and get involved in development.
* Ungana has a home visit program where members visit different childrens, oldage homes, remand and prisons on a monthly basis. Homes that Ungana have visited include: Imani Rehabilitation Center-Kayole, Mama Lucy Street Girls Rehabilitation Center- Ongata Rongai, Thomas Barnados, Newlife Home, Cottolengo, Mukuru Kwa Njenga etcetera.
