 Mission/Vision
The Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) is a global Christian, ecumenical voluntary movement for men and women with special emphasis on, and the genuine involvement of young people. It seeks to share the Christian ideal of building a human community of justice with love, peace and reconciliation for the fullness of life for all creation. YMCAs work for social justice for all people irrespective of religion, race and gender or cultural background.
Nagpur YMCA: Established in 1895, the Nagpur YMCA is part of a worldwide association, and one of the oldest NGOs in Central India. Its membership is open to all, irrespective of gender, class or creed.
What does the organization do?
Addressing community issues
The Nagpur YMCA has been proactively involved from its earliest days in addressing specific community needs in the city. In the past, this included involvement with mill workers for their welfare, providing hostel accommodation for needy students from outside Nagpur, and encouraging sports and games for healthy living.
Youth Empowerment
Today, Nagpur YMCA continues to have a high profile presence in the sports life of the city, having badminton courts and a fitness center. However, this is one of its contributions. The major focus is on promoting justice and working for the welfare of needy and marginalized groups, and youth empowerment. To this end, there are 15 community outreach centers, balwadis, vocational training courses and leadership development programs particularly among youth. Health promotion is a major activity.
YMCA responding to HIV and AIDS
1) Information and Guidance Centre: Establish to provide counseling and guidance for PLWHAs. A tele helpline (6418121) was started to provide counseling on telephone
2) Surakshit Jawan – Peer Education Programme started in 2003 to promote awareness and prevention among young people in high schools, colleges and single migrants reaching out to 1500 in 2006.
3) Sanjeevan – Support group of PLWHAs facilitated and formed under the patronage of Nagpur YMCA. Now registered under Societies Registration Act as NNP (Nagpur Network of People living with HIV and AIDS) and operates from the Information and Guidance Centre of Nagpur YMCA. Sanjeevan now has over 250 members.
4) Nutrition Programme for PLWHAs: Food supplements (Bulgar and Oil) provided to needy PLWHAs. Supported by Catholic Relief Services through Nagpur Multipurpose Social Service Society of Nagpur Archdiocese.
5) Surakshit Samaj – Targeted Intervention programme for truckers, cleaners, CSWs and communities along the National Highway 7 at Khapri Naka, Wardha-Hyderabad Road, Nagpur, reaching out to 1200 in 2006.
6) Interfaith Forum: YMCA was the first to initiate a faith-based forum in Nagpur city. The forum now enjoys wide support from all church based and organizations of other faiths and provides a platform for FBOs to respond effectively to HIV and AIDS.
7) MSM Intervention: Nagpur YMCA was also instrumental in facilitating the formation of MSM (Men having sex with Men) group, which is now a registered group, named as SARATHI Trust and now operates from the Information and Guidance Centre of the YMCA. The trust has over 30 members.
