freeDimensional
Mission/Vision
freeDimensional is a platform of collaboration for linking artistic communities to social justice movements globally.
For issues to reach society at large, free and open expression is critical. At times imposed limitations or censorship require movement of voices and ideas in order for expression to be possible, safe, and unrestricted. Herein lies our opportunity to act. By connecting critical people, places, and issues freeDimensional serves as a platform of collaboration for linking artistic communities to creative individuals and social justice movements worldwide.
freeDimensional envisions a world in which diverse ideas and rigorous debate are nurtured by community spaces that are unique for their creative outlook, a process that results in direct action on critical, contemporary issues.
What does the organization do?
freeDimensional organizes community arts space and local resources for the support and protection of individuals who create dialogue on global issues and inequalities through their art and media.
Through its extensive network of 50 international partner sites, freeDimensional is able to identify and respond to issues that lead to censorship. With our regional knowledge hubs in Cairo (The Townhouse Gallery), Sao Paulo (Casa das Caldeiras), Kuala Lumpur (International Forum for InterMedia Art), Berlin (UfaFabrik), and New York City (Center for International Art in Community) freeDimensional is able to act globally to facilitate rapid response solutions for creative individuals in distress.
freeDimensional seeks to highlight the conditions of mobility, migration, and free expression faced by culture workers (artists, activists and citizen journalists) and the implications these hold for society at large. We engage in a particular style of networking that builds on existing resources in the art, media and entertainment sectors in order to engage and financially underwrite direct actions necessary to help culture workers-in-distress and use their stories to illustrate critical, contemporary issues. Art and creativity are often commodified without acknowledgment of the social issues they represent, and thus the relation between culture and society erodes. freeDimensional seeks to strengthen this relation by taking practical steps to ensure individual safety, raise awareness and instigate change.
freeDimensional has initiated the following actions with artistic communities to assist artists, activists, and citizen journalists addressing global issues and inequalities:
- rapid response safe haven
- art spaces hosting activists for strategic access to decision-makers
- mobility funding
- income generation
- regional & issue-based dialogues among artists, activists and journalists
- distress services mapping and placement referrals
- tool-kits for new community arts spaces
- thematic campaigns (including publications, meetings, research, exhibitions, programs and policy advocacy for vulnerable groups)
Opportunities for Youth
fD's youth program, Syndicate 19, is administered through fD's local affiliate, Center for International Art in Community (CIAC). Syndicate 19 is a civic digital journalism initiative that partners with the Bedford Academy - a public high school in Bedford-Stuyvesant (Brooklyn, New York City) - to create an outlet for community media managed by local youth. You can find out more about Syndicate 19 at http://artincommunity.org
