Drop the Debt is the short-term successor to Jubilee 2000, the international millennium campaign to cancel the unpayable debts of the world's poorest countries. The campaign, responsible for the biggest petition ever of 24 million signatures, persuaded the world's wealthiest nations to pledge to cancel 100 billion dollars of the debts of the world's poorest countries - an amount unthinkable when the campaign started. A real achievement, but not yet enough.
Drop the Debt is supported by an alliance of major organisations - including CAFOD, Christian Aid, Oxfam, Tearfund, UNISON and the World Development Movement - and works closely with debt campaigns in over sixty countries. We are building international pressure in the months leading up to the G8 (G7 plus Russia) Genoa summit in July to make sure the world's leaders finish the unfinished business of the millennium year - by announcing a New Deal on Debt.
